Building a Wardrobe
Building a Wardrobe
Let’s be honest—building the perfect wardrobe can feel intimidating. With so many styles, colors, and trends, where do you even begin? Here, we’ll go over some tips to help you create a wardrobe that’s functional, versatile, and tailored to your lifestyle.
Wear Clothes That Fit You
This may sound cliché, but fit is everything. The right fit can make or break an outfit. As someone who loves an oversized look, I know it’s essential to choose pieces that achieve the exact fit I’m going for. For example, if you’re typically a size medium but want a looser, oversized fit, going for an XXL might overpower your look and drape in a way you didn't intend. The same goes for pieces you want to fit more snugly; instead of sizing down, choose items that closely match your measurements.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone Gradually
Exploring new styles can be exciting, but it’s best to take it slow. Fashion trends are constantly evolving, and while it’s fun to try something new, buying a whole wardrobe of a style you’re just testing out could leave you feeling frustrated. Let’s say you’re curious about neon colors—rather than buying every neon piece available, start with one item. Try it out and see how it complements your skin tone and existing wardrobe. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed or disappointed if it doesn’t work out.
Invest in Versatile Basics That Suit Your Style
Basics don’t look the same for everyone. What you consider a “basic” piece might vary from someone else’s definition. A versatile basic could mean having multiple colors or styles of a shirt, pants, or jacket that easily layer and can be mixed and matched. The goal is to have foundational items that you can style in many ways, so they’re adaptable and can create multiple looks.
Incorporate Timeless Pieces
Timeless pieces are items that have proven their staying power, consistently coming back in style year after year. Think of items like a well-tailored blazer, a crisp white button-down, dark denim jeans, a classic trench coat, and simple leather loafers. These are versatile, easy to style, and give an instant polish to any outfit.
Play Around with Your Clothes
Fashion is meant to be fun! Many iconic trends came from people experimenting with their clothes and finding what they genuinely liked. Don’t hesitate to try new pairings, layer differently, or add an unexpected accessory. Playing around with your wardrobe can lead to discovering unique combinations that express your personal style.
Create a Mood Board for Inspiration
Finding your style is easier when you have a visual reference. Try creating a look book or mood board to capture the vibe you’re aiming for. Once you’ve assembled a few looks, look for patterns. For example, if you consistently see turtlenecks across different outfits, try experimenting with various styles and ways to wear them.
Be Yourself
Fashion is a form of self-expression. Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. At the end of the day, no one else is wearing your clothes—you are. So make sure they represent the real you.
